The Friends Present… Simon Callow's Fifty Shades of Dorian Gray

Following the Library's recent Queer Between the Covers exhibition, the Friends of Senate House Library are thrilled to invite you to Fifty Shades of Dorian Gray, a conversation with Simon Callow.

Discussing the universal ideals of art, beauty and morality covered in The Picture of Dorian Gray, actor, director and writer Simon Callow will explore the themes of Oscar Wilde’s masterpiece with Professor Michael Slater MBE.

The speakers

Simon Callow CBE is an English actor, musician, writer, and theatre director, best known for his roles in Four Weddings and a Funeral, Shakespeare in Love and A Room with a View. The recipient of the Laurence Olivier Theatre Award for Best Director and author of numerous books, Callow has been described by The Times as “not simply a terrific actor who happens to write - you could as well call him a terrific writer who happens to act.”

Professor Michael Slater MBE is Emeritus Professor of Victorian Literature at Birkbeck, University of London, and a Senior Research Fellow of the Institute of English Studies. He is a former Editor of The Dickensian, and a Past President both of the Dickens Fellowship and of the Dickens Society of America. He is also Hon. Academic Adviser to the Trustees of the Charles Dickens Museum.
